Which AI Will Write Explicit Content? A Guide for Fiction Writers
Updated October 2026
You asked your usual assistant for the scene your story has been building toward, and it faded to black, summarized, or refused. That is policy, not a bad prompt. This guide covers what each mainstream assistant does with an explicit scene in 2026, which tools will write it, the free options, and how to make the scene read like fiction once you have a tool that will write it.
The short answer
The AI that will write explicit content is one built for fiction, not a general assistant: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot decline explicit sex scenes by policy, and Grok's behavior is inconsistent and poorly documented. Fiction tools such as Sudowrite, NovelAI, Novelcrafter with an unmoderated model, or a local model behind SillyTavern will write it. On iPhone, InkPal writes explicit fiction between consenting adult characters, keeps drafts on your device, and is free to start.
Why ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Copilot refuse the scene
Each of these companies publishes a position. Here is what each one says, as of October 2026.
ChatGPT. OpenAI's Model Spec, in the version dated 18 December 2025, says plainly: "The assistant should not generate erotica." The exceptions are narrow (scientific, historical, news or artistic contexts where sensitive content is appropriate), and nothing in the spec says a romance chapter qualifies. OpenAI announced an adult mode with "erotica for verified adults" in October 2025. It was delayed, reportedly shelved indefinitely in March 2026 according to the Financial Times, and had not launched as of the latest reporting found (September 2026). A newer Model Spec exists, so check OpenAI's current policy if you see claims that this has changed.
Claude. Anthropic's usage policy has a section titled "Do Not Generate Sexually Explicit Content". It rules out depicting sex acts, fetish or fantasy content, and erotic chats. In August 2026 TechCrunch reported that enforcement varied between Claude model versions. That is a reason not to build a manuscript on it: the policy is the line, and a scene that slips through on one version gets refused on the next.
Gemini. Google's Gemini app guidelines say Gemini "should not generate outputs that describe or depict explicit or graphic sexual acts". Artistic context is weighed, but the guidelines do not address fiction specifically, so the policy gives a fiction writer nothing to lean on.
Grok. The loosest of the group, and the least documented. xAI's acceptable use policy could not be read for this guide, so check the current policy yourself. A January 2026 Common Sense Media assessment found Grok's companion characters engaging in uncensored erotic roleplay, while third-party reports describe explicit text requests as inconsistent. Inconsistent is the problem: you cannot plan a book around a tool that may or may not finish the chapter.
Microsoft Copilot. The clearest no. In October 2025 Mustafa Suleyman, who leads Microsoft AI, said (as reported by Fortune) that Copilot would not offer romantic, flirtatious or erotic content, even for adults: "That's just not a service we're going to provide." No change has been reported since.
What about jailbreak prompts? They decay. A prompt that gets one scene out of a mainstream model tends to stop working mid-draft, when the provider updates the model or the conversation gets long enough for the refusal training to reassert itself. It also breaks the provider's terms. The full explanation of why mainstream models refuse, and why workarounds are fragile, is in our uncensored AI writing guide.
Which AI allows explicit content writing
Tools that will write an explicit scene fall into four groups. Prices are vendor list prices read in October 2026; policies change, so test before you commit a manuscript.
| Category | Allows explicit fiction | Platform | Privacy | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fiction-writing apps: InkPal, Sudowrite, NovelAI | Yes. InkPal is built for it; Sudowrite says its Muse model "doesn't filter adult scenes"; NovelAI's terms require 18+ and have no adult-content section | InkPal: iPhone app. Sudowrite and NovelAI: web (NovelAI has no official iOS app) | InkPal: drafts on device, no training. NovelAI: encrypted storage. Sudowrite: not stated | InkPal: free to start. Sudowrite: $10 to $44/month. NovelAI: from $10/month |
| Web uncensored generators: DreamGen, River | River says it writes mature fiction "without refusals or lectures". DreamGen is described as uncensored by third parties; check its current terms | DreamGen: web. River: platform not stated | River says drafts are never used to train AI. DreamGen: not stated | DreamGen: from $7.83/month, plus a free tier. River: free to start |
| Roleplay front-ends and local models: SillyTavern, Janitor AI, Ollama, KoboldCpp | Depends on the model. SillyTavern has no model of its own; Janitor AI puts NSFW behind an 18+ account setting | SillyTavern: self-hosted, no App Store app. Janitor AI: iOS app | Local backends keep text on your machine; cloud backends send it to that provider | SillyTavern: free, open source. Janitor AI: free iOS download |
| Writing suites with an adult toggle: Novelcrafter | Yes, with an unmoderated model. Codex entries can be flagged NSFW so they only reach NSFW prompts | Browser | Depends on the AI provider you connect | $4 to $20/month, no free plan, 21-day trial |
For named picks with who each one suits, see the ranked list. Full disclosure: InkPal publishes this guide.
Is there a free AI that allows explicit content writing?
Yes, but free usually means capped. InkPal is free to download on iPhone with no sign-up, so you can try a real scene before paying for premium features. SillyTavern is free and open source; pair it with a local model through Ollama or KoboldCpp and the whole stack costs nothing if your computer can run it. DreamGen's pricing page mentions a free tier, and River is free to start, with a full first chapter before you pay. Sudowrite offers a free trial with no credit card, and Novelcrafter has a 21-day trial but no free plan. Claude has a free plan too, but a free plan does not change its content policy.
Writing an explicit scene that reads like fiction
A tool that will write the scene is half the job. The other half is giving it a scene to write. Three parts:
Build. Set what is already true between the characters, whose point of view you are in, and the pace. "Close third, her POV, present tense, slow build" produces a different scene from "open mid-scene".
Beat. Decide the one emotional move the scene makes: she stops protecting herself, he admits what he wants. Explicit detail should serve that move. Body and motion in plain language, anchored in what the POV character notices.
Aftermath. Ask for the conversation afterwards. It is where romance readers find out what the scene meant, and an explicit scene without it usually reads thin.
The AI story generator guide expands each part with weak and strong prompts you can copy.
From one scene to a whole book
Once one scene works, the problem becomes keeping chapter nine consistent with chapter two. The AI chapter planner guide shows how to give each chapter a synopsis, a length and a cast so the AI drafts the book you planned. If a chapter could go two ways, branch the story and read both versions before choosing. When a chapter is done, listen to it as an audiobook; clumsy rhythm and repeated phrasing are easier to hear than to see.
Where the line is
Explicit is fine; the line is consenting adults in fiction. No sexual content involving minors, no sexual content about real people, and no non-consent presented approvingly. Inside that line, romance, erotica, kink and dark fiction are fair game. The NSFW AI writing app page sets out exactly what InkPal will and won't write.
Frequently asked questions
What AI will write explicit content?
Tools built for fiction rather than general assistants. Sudowrite says it handles mature content, NovelAI's terms have no adult-content section beyond an 18+ requirement, Novelcrafter passes your text to whichever model you connect, and SillyTavern has no filter of its own; limits depend on the model you connect. On iPhone, InkPal writes explicit fiction between consenting adult characters and keeps drafts on your device. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot decline explicit scenes by policy.
Is there an AI that allows explicit content writing for free?
Yes, with limits. InkPal is free to download on iPhone with no sign-up. SillyTavern is free and open source, and you can pair it with a local model at no cost if your computer can run one. DreamGen describes a free tier, River is free to start, and Sudowrite and Novelcrafter offer free trials rather than free plans. Expect free tiers to cap how much you can generate.
Can ChatGPT write explicit content?
Not reliably. OpenAI's Model Spec (December 2025) says the assistant should not generate erotica outside narrow artistic, scientific or news contexts. The adult mode OpenAI announced in October 2025 was delayed, reportedly shelved indefinitely in March 2026, and had not launched as of the latest reporting found in September 2026. Check OpenAI's current policy before relying on it for a manuscript.
Which apps are best for writing explicit scenes?
It depends on where you write. On iPhone, InkPal is built for uncensored fiction with on-device drafts and a chapter planner. On a desktop browser, Sudowrite and Novelcrafter suit long-form novelists, and NovelAI suits writers who want encrypted storage. If you want full control and can run a local model, SillyTavern is the free option. Whatever you pick, test it with a real scene from your book before you commit a manuscript to it.
